چکیده

Surface-emitting lasers with an external cavity delivering a diffraction-limited beam have shown the potential to outperform edge-emitting devices in applications demanding high brightness (emitted intensity per unit solid angle), like pumping of doped fiber amplifiers or frequency doubling [1]–[3]. Due to the large mode size, the VECSEL concept is powerscalable by expanding the pumped area and the heat-sink. This property makes VECSELs less susceptible to catastrophic optical mirror damage (COMD), spatial hole burning, and thermal lensing in comparison to edge-emitting devices. Similar to the sophisticated vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL), the optical resonator consists of a multiple quantum well gain material which is embedded between three distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs).

Feedback-Dependent Threshold of Electrically Pumped VECSELs

We present the investigation of the feedback-dependent threshold of an 822 nm wavelength electrically pumped vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (VECSEL). The setup is capable of resolving micrometer-size features on the laser surface, while demanding highly accurate alignment. Modified design criteria are developed, which address this issue, and approaches for the fabrication of mi...

A Fabrication Approach for Hybrid-Integrated Electrically Pumped VECSELs

Unlike a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL), which comprises two highly reflecting distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs), the extended cavity in VECSELs employs a third mirror. The fabrication of such a device requires a long process chain, including the patterning of the VCSEL structures, definition of the extended optical resonator, mirror coating and die bonding. While VCSELs have ...

Short-Cavity Integrated VECSELs: A Fabrication Approach

We outline the fabrication of an electrically pumped surface-emitting laser with a short vertical extended cavity (VECSEL) for sensing applications. The emission wavelength is detuned by introducing microparticles into the cavity via a microfluidic channel. Multiple longitudinal modes can fit inside the resonator. A reproducible detuning of the extended cavity demands a longitudinal mode spacin...

Blue Light Emitting Electrically Pumped VECSELs with Optical Powers in the Milliwatt Range

In the last few years, VECSELs have become an attractive laser source for various applications. Due to favorable features, such as high output power and good beam quality, optically pumped semiconductor VECSELs (OPS-VECSELs) [1] can be used, e.g., in laser printing, absorption spectroscopy or as a pump laser in the near-infrared spectral range. Furthermore, the extended cavity configuration giv...
